Former Patient Demonstrates World’s First Factory-Built Car Designed for Wheelchairs

Kristina Shepard Rhoades, a former Shriners Hospital patient and the 2005 Ms. Wheelchair California, drove to Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Northern California on Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the world’s first factory-built, wheelchair-accessible automobile. Known as the MV-1, the wheelchair friendly car is manufactured by VPG (Vehicle Production Group). Rhoades, who is spokesperson for the manufacturer, demonstrated the features of the car for patients, guests and the community.

Paratransit car sales specialist lifts vehicle price barriers for disabled

Sacramento’s Paratransit Inc. moved into the car sales business without a hitch earlier this year, hiring industry veteran Richard Rosebush to find affordable vehicles for the disabled.

The challenge for Rosebush hasn’t been finding the right cars or finding buyers with good credit. Rather, Rosebush has struggled with getting traditional banks and credit unions to understand the value of a used, modified vehicle.

“I have a 2000 Windstar with 80,000 miles on it,” he said. “Kelly Blue Book says it’s a $5,000 vehicle. In reality, it’s a $15,000 vehicle.”

Nonprofit given Northern California license for “wheelchair user’s vehicle”

The manufacturer of the first vehicle designed for wheelchair users recently awarded the Northern California license to Destinations Mobility, the new division of local nonprofit Paratransit, Inc.

The MV-1 from Detroit-based Vehicle Production Group LLC is the first specially designed van built with wheelchair users’ feedback rather than converted from already-built vans. “We are really proud to be part of this new venture,” said Richard Rosebush, Destinations Mobility division manager.
